日本 スーパーコンピュータ「京」が世界一に
２０１１年６月２０日の時点でのスーパーコンピュータTOP500のうち、日本が開発を進めていたスーパーコンピュータ「京」が中国・アメリカCrayを抜いて世界一となった。
「二位じゃだめなんですか」問題において予算が１１０億円削減されたが、使用目的を追求されるため、今回は使用する演算ソフトウェアも同時に開発が進められている。
一般の人ではCorei７程度の性能でおなかいっぱいかも知れないが、スーパーコンピュータを使いこなすことで、さらなる高度なシミュレーションが高速でできるようになる。
よくいわれる低コスト型のPCクラスタと呼ばれる汎用マシンを多数用いたスパコンもあるが、これは行列の演算等、通信帯域がボトルネックとなるため、あまり複雑なシミュレーション等には向かない等の欠点がある。
一般家庭でも簡単にできるスパコンとしてはGPGPUがあるが、これはPCクラスタに近い構成となる。
ただ、まだ完成は２０１２年の夏となっているため、 10ペタフロップスまでさらなる演算能力の向上が期待される。
スパコンを開発することで得られるメリットとしては、
・より高速なインターフェースの開発
・より高速な演算プロセッサの開発
・より高度なシミュレーションソフトウェアの開発
等、複数分野へわたる応用等ができるため、インターネットが低性能で使いきれていない現在において、さらなる性能向上及び可能性が広がることとなる。
また、 すでにアメリカでは「京」を超す100PFlopsを目標としたスパコンの研究が開始されているため、「京」が完成したのち、研究を止めず、さらなる高みを目指す必要がある。
